Elgin Smith

Mr. Elgin B. Smith, 84, better known to everyone as "Buck" of Bethel, Kentucky, passed away Sunday morning, October 14, 2018 at the St. Joseph Mt. Sterling Hospital after an extended illness. He was born October 9, 1934 in Fleming County to the late Mary Williams Smith and Kirby Smith.

After serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, he went on to become employed by I.B.M.  in Lexington, retiring there after many years of service. He later worked as a bus driver for the Bath County school system. He was a graduate of the Fleming County High School and attended the Bethel Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and always enjoyed staying busy and working. Buck took an active part in the care and operation of the Longview Cemetery at Bethel. He started helping work in the cemetery at the age of eighteen.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter Kimberly Smith Gorrell and one sister Jewel Mae Manley.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean Roe Smith, one son, Todd Smith of Lexington, A granddaughter who he raised, Ashlea Hutchison and her husband Jason of Bethel, one sister Lousie Crump of Flemingsburg and two great-grandchildren; Caleb Crouch and Carlea Hutchison. Also several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville with Rev. Kenneth Hill officiating.

Burial will follow in the Longview Cemetery at Bethel with full military rights performed by American Legion Post 22 of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.

Visitation at the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville will be after 5:00 P.M. Monday.

Pallbearers will include Ricky Crump, Randy Crump, Jimmy Jett, Ricky Bussell, Jason Hutchison and Ricky Gorrell.
