Winfred Ward, a beloved figure known for his warmth and storytelling, passed away at his home in Olympia, Kentucky, on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on March 5, 1936, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Hollie Ward and Dora May Ward. Winfred led a life that was rich in experiences, work, and family.
A dedicated and hardworking individual, Winfred retired from Western Electric in Illinois, where he spent numerous years shaping his professional journey.
Outside of work, Winfred was an avid outdoorsman, relishing activities such as fishing and hunting. He also had a passion for cooking out and found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren. His love for family was evident, and he cherished the moments spent with them, often filling the air with laughter as he shared his stories.
In addition to his parents, Winfred was preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Jo Ward, his brother, Buford Ward, his sister, Josephine, and her husband Wayne Thacker, along with his grandson, Michael Pickle. He is also mourned by his two nephews, Dean Ward and Charles Ward.
He is survived by his loving family, which includes one son, Joe Ward (Sherri) of Abingdon, Illinois, and one daughter, Sheila Ward-Baker of Pekin, Illinois. Winfred took great pride in being a grandfather to his six grandchildren: Nicole and Joseph Ward, Josh and Daniel Baker, Crystal and Jenny Early. He was also blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy and happiness: Emma, Jacob, Isaiah, Connor, Kinnick, Kael, Adrienne, Autumn, Connor, Kalynn, Shaylynn, Lexi, DeAnthony and Mason. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Hollie Ward Jr. (Evelyn) of Elwood, Illinois, his sister-in-law, Pearl Ward, and many cherished nieces and nephews, including Timmy "Tim" Ward (Fran), Johnny "John" Ward, Allen Ward, Wayne Thacker, and Gail Thacker Pearson.
Services honoring Winfred’s life will be held on February 16, 2025. Visitation is scheduled for 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Michael R Gray Funeral Home located at 89 Slate Ave, Owingsville, KY 40360. A graveside service will follow at Thacker Cemetery, on Sour Springs Road, Olympia at 2:00 PM.
